These pictures were some of the first I had taken in Mexico City. I hope you enjoy them. I didn't look for beauty. I just looked for whatever was interesting or different.
Zocalo with a view of the Cathedral and flag
This photograph of the Zocalo, or central plaza is facing the Cathedral. You can see that a stage is being set up in in the middle of the Plaza facing south.

Typical Downtown Storefront
Only a block or two from the Zocalo, central plaza, of Mexico City, you'll find many store fronts like this. You'll notice the big underwear poster on the wall along with actual clothing.
Clothing is also hung across the entrance so if you aren't short you will hit your head with it. In Mexico, most street vendors and in this case, shops don't care if you hit your head on products hung across the path, sidewalk or doorway so be careful!
Green Taxis Looking out of the Zocalo
The green VW Beetle taxis were a landmark of Mexico City. Unfortunately they are not very fuel efficient, so the government started replacing them with newer vehicles like the Tsuru. There are still a few out there.
The vertical banner is a flag still up for the Patriotic month. Mexican flag colors are also Christmas colors so try to figure out how to reuse some decorations!

Shield of Christopher Columbus
This mosaic is on the building across from the Cathedral on the southern side of the Zocalo, It says Escudo de Cristóbal Colón Descubrador de America.
Large Fountain at the Zocalo
This fountain is located just off the south east corner of the Zocalo.
This statue is a few blocks south of the Zocalo
Notice the reflection is very bright.
Zocalo Metro Entrance
This is one of the entrances to the Metro, Mexico City's subway system. It is large and runs well. It is also over crowded so if you don't have to, avoid traveling at rush hour(s).
At the time a ticket cost 1.5 pesos. now, 2007, it costs 2 pesos. They are in the process of adding prepaid and rechargeable cards, perhaps in 2008? The subway is obviously subsidized by the Mexico DF (Distrito Federal) government.
Typical Magazine stand near the Zocalo
Magazine stands are very common in Mexico City especially downtown in the Centro Historico. The main difference between one here and the U.S. is that magazine stands here sell Porn magazines often having them completely visible to those walking by clipped to a wire mesh or to the top of the stand.
Police in front of the Palace
One thing international tourists will notice right away is the number of police officers and military. This is just how things are.
Most of the schools are surrounded by tall concrete walls with barbed wire or pieces of glass from broken bottles too!

Calle Moneda Window View of the National Palace
This photo was taken from a window of the Hostal Moneda which caters to backpackers and others who need a simple place to sleep while enjoying Mexico. Their services was friendly and it was great to get to know people from all over the world. I met people from Spain, U.K., Canada, and Australia. This view is of the north side of the palace. I don't think the side entrance is even used.
Calle Moneda Garbage Truck in the Early Morning
This probably won't be on your walls any time soon, but garbage collection is essential for any mega-city.
This photo was taken from a window at the Hostal Moneda, one block from the Zocalo in front of the north side of the National Palace.
You can see street vendors starting to display clothing and other cheap products. Many people go downtown to buy products in the street. Sometimes it gets so crowded you can barely squeeze through.
I have been told that the government has evicted street vendors. We'll see if that works or not. I liked buying things in the street, but I get frustrated when the vendors take the ENTIRE sidewalk by making a double row of stands. I feel no pity for them since they don't really care about those who are shopping.
Most of the products sold are cheap Chinese imports. I have heard that there is a Korean mafia, but I can't say if it is true or just a rumor.
